      Thomas joined the Mormon Church (LDS) in 1843 and migrated to Nauvoo, Illinois. His first wife, Mary Ann, died 27 Apr 1848 at Council Bluffs, Iowa. He later went to Utah leaving 15 Sep 1852 under the direction of Captain David Wood, arriving in Utah 1 Oct 1852 with his five surviving children and his new wife, Catherine, and settled in Spanish Fork. He served in the Daniel Woods Company during the Indian Wars. In 1860, Thomas helped settle Franklin, Utah. Later Franklin was found to actually be located in Idaho and was the first town to be settled in Idaho territory.
