      When David was twenty-four years of age, he married Miss Elizabeth Meisenhelter, and settled upon a farm, on the Little Conewago Creek, near what is now Weigelstown. He was a successful farmer, and in 1811 erected a large distillery, manufacturing whisky which he conveyed by his teams to Baltimore, there being no railroads at the time where it was marketed. He reared a family of five sons and five daughters: Henry, Felix, David, Samuel and Daniel M., Barbara, Mary, Elizabeth, Nancy and Sarah [who died young], all of whom were married except for Felix, who died young.

      Deed Record 3-H-101 dated April 9,1824,shows that David Bentzel bought a 115 acre tract for $4,0113.00 from Catherine, the widow of Martin Ilgenfritz,in lieu of a Dower for her he agreees to provide the following items: She is to have the right to live in her present dwelling while she remains a widow, pasture & stable-room for 2 cows,1 ton of hay,1 ton of second crop,12 bushell of wheat,12 bushel of rye,10 bushel of corn,6 bushel of potatoes,100 pounds of beef,apples for her own use,1 barrel of cider,the use of half her garden,a quarter of flax ground to be plowed and sowed,he is to cut and haul her firewood yearly. Adjoining lands were owned by Jacob Hake Daniel Crone, Abraham Frantz and Frederick Ilgenfritz, it is being part of a 250 acre tract granted to George Ilgenfritz 1788. The tract David bought was at the junction of Fox Run and the Little Conewago Creek across from which they built a dam and a large mill house in 1831 known to this day as Bentzel's Mill. The mill was operated by four generations until 1917. The old water wheels ceased to turn after being used for 100 years when the business was commericalized. A release deed for the estate of David Bentzel dated August 3,1855 found in record 3Y-223 was signed by George Heilman as guardian for Daniel & Sarah minor children of Nancy Heilman a deceased daughter
