While still an infant, Edward's mother, Deborah Matthews, died and his father remarried. When the LDS missionaries came to his home town the family was convinced of the truthfulness of their message and embraced the gospel. In the year 1844, Edward and the Pierce family set sail for America aboard the Yankee square-rigger, Norfolk. They set sail from Liverpool on September 19th, 1844. The ship arrived in New Orleans on November 11, 1844. From there they took a river steamer to St. Louis, Missouri. This is where they made their home until the Saints were called on the trek across the plains to Utah. While in St. Louis Edward married Helen Pierce. Edward, his wife, and two sons left Kanesville on July 4, 1850 with the Edward Hunter Company, crossing the plains and arriving in Utah on October 13, 1850.... His occupation was mostly farming and freighting.
