  • Notes
    • NAME: One pedigree resource lists name as "Elizabeth Bray Bourban." Alice Roberts Carter notes list "Elizabeth Bray Bourban" as her given name, and also "Francis Bray" and "Margaret Shelly" her parents.

BAPTISM: Ancestral File lists baptism date 11 Dec 1844, although Thomas Shelley's journal lists he was baptized along with his mother 11 Dec 1848.

DEATH & BURIAL: Ancestral File indicates died/buried at/near Memphis. One internet resource lists that it is believed Elizabeth's body was later found after her drowning and that James, her husband, sent money to have her properly buried -- This has yet to be verified as it is only hearsay. Millenial Star (vol 13, p 200-201) lists Elizabeth died 14 Apr 1851

On April 9 of that year the ship Ellen Maria transferred most of her Mormon passengers to the Alex. Scott, which carried them to St. Louis. They arrived April 16 after a 7-day journey. On the trip a woman [Elizabeth Bray Shelley] fell overboard and drowned while drawing a bucket of water; such accidents were not unusual. This fine side-wheeler had only one deck, a transom stern, a cabin above a plain head, and plied the Mississippi for about twelve years before being dismantled--as indicated in her registrations.

Deaths: February 11th, Sarah, daughter of R. and S. Preece, aged six months, February 16th, Ann, aged eleven weeks, daughter of J. and E. Toone; March 8th, George, aged two years and eight months, son of G. and S. Spizer; March 24th, Marintha Althera, aged fifteen months, daughter of Apostle Orson and Sarah M. Pratt; April 14th, Elizabeth Shelley, aged fifty-five years.

April 9th, most of the company left New Orleans for St. Louis, Missouri, on the Alexander Scott, one of the largest boats on the Mississipi river, and arrived in St. Louis on the sixteenth. A sad accident occurred going up the river in the case of Sister Shelley, aged fifty-five years, wife of James Shelley, from Worcester Conference, who, in attempting to draw a bucket of water from the stream while the boat was running at the rate of ten miles an hour, was suddenly drawn into the water by the force of that mighty current. She floated for a moment and then sank to rise no more. The engines were stopped immediately and a boat manned and sent in search of her, but it was unsuccessful in obtaining the body.
