      TWO PIONEERS DEAD
      ---
JOHN HUNTINGTON, SR., PASSES AWAY AT HIS HOME
      ---
HAD BEEN A RESIDENT OF THIS COUNTY FOR 53 YEARS

John Huntington, Sr., died yesterday at the home of his son, John F. Huntington, 221 Harmony Street, from extreme old age. He had rounded out his 80th year, fifty-three years of which were spent in Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie county. Death came peacefully and without any painful sickness. He leaves five sons, J. F., Ephraim, R. H. and W. L. of Council Bluffs, and O. E. of Moorehead, Ia. The three daughters are Mrs. Mary J. Stoebele of Oakland, Mrs. C. A. Cooper of Council Bluffs and Mrs. C. H. Cooper of Hancock.
Mr. Huntington was one of the real pioneers of this city. He came here in 1859, but moved to Oakland in 1876 and remained there until four years ago, when he returned here and took up his abode with his sons. He was born in Chagley, Lancastershire, Eng., September 15, 1822, and came to America when but 17 years old. He reached Council Bluffs on May 1, 1850, and engaged in the mercantile business, and was for many years one of the most successful boot and shoe dealers in the town.
He had much to do with the early history of the town, taking a prominent part in its affairs. In 1869 he was elected a member of the town council, serving one term.

      Mr. Huntington a Steadfast Democrat.

In politics Mr. Huntington was always the most uncompromising democrat, and for a period of many years emphsized his convictions in a way that made him one of the most noted men in the community. When Lincoln was inaugurated the first time in 1860, Mr. Huntington made a vow that he would never shave again until a democrat was elected president of the United States. This vow he faithfully kept, and his heavy growth of beard became a familiar object to all who knew him and thousands who had heard of his self-assumed obligation. The vow carried with it the prevision that he would shave when a democrat became president, but this part of it was forgotten by many, and when Cleveland was inaugurated in 1884 Mr. Huntington entered a barber shop and sat in the chair for the first time in twenty-four years. When he came out clean-shaven none of his friends knew him and when he reached his home in Oakland he was a stranger to even his own children. They knew his team and the voice, but the changed expression of his face baffled them all for a time.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence on Harmony street, his five sons and son-in-law, C. H. Cooper, acting as pallbearers. Rev. Harvey Hostetler will be the officiating clergyman. The funeral will be under the auspices of Council Bluffs lodge No. 49, I. O. O. F., of which he was a charter member. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.
