    • CHILDREN: There are several children that have been listed by various individuals, however no primary documentation has been identified establishing them as children of Baltzer and Marie Sophia: Catherine (b.1779), Henry (b. 1 Jul 1770), Barbara (b. ~1768), David (b.1771), Anna Maria (b.1781), & Elizabeth (b.1783). The document used by most to identify these children as Baltzer and Marie Sophia's is History of York County (secondary source). The primary document which places them as Henry Bentzel and Barbara IMMEL's children is Henry's will.

  • Notes
    • NAME: There are two conflicting pieces of data which demonstrate the names "Baltzer" and "Andreas" as the same individual. One is the death record of Baltzer Bentzel at Baltimore which lists his birth in 1753. Early German Settlers of York Co., PA lists "Andreas" born 31 May 1753 and baptized at "CLY" on 17 Jun 1753 (Is 'CLY' Christ Lutheran Church?). Could this be the same individual?

BIRTH-DEATH-SPOUSE-MARRIAGE: Information received from various sources: James A. Bensyl, Box 181, Odgen, Ill 61859 17 Mar 2000 (descendency chart, 43p)
Thelma Deveny, tdeveney#earthlink.net (3 Sep 2002): "Pennsylvania Births York County, 1730-1800" by John T. Humphrey; also "York County, Pennsylvania Church Records of the 18th Century" by Marlene S. Bates and F. Edward Wright

OCCUPATION: History of York County indicates Baltzer was a veteran of the American Revolution, a Captain. Ancestry.com shows a forum reference to Baltzer Bentzel indicating he was an attorney at Baltimore, Maryland with a brother. It is doubtful he was an attorney, as he is listed in the Baltimore City directories from 1796 to 1814 as a cordwainer, carpenter, and trunk maker.

CENSUS: Not convinced the 1790 U.S. Census listing for "Balzer Pencill," is our ancestor, unless we have an improper listing of his children. The census shows that in 1790 he could only have 2 sons in the household and 1 daughter. The 1800 U.S. Census lists the same man, either "Balzer Pencill" or "Balzer Pencile," but only listing himself, age 26-44 yrs, and an unknown son, age 10-15 yrs. The fact that his wife, Marie Sophia, is not listed is expected since she died in 1795.

      WILL: LaRee Anderson lists Baltzer's will is in one of the following film's: FHL 0013647 (1754-1799), 0013648 (1799-1815), 0013649 (1815-1827), or 0013667. Baltzer's inventory was located in 'Inventories 1816-17,' 5 Apr 1816. Additional listing FHL 0013649 p 136, 18 Apr 1816.

There is a ship passenger listing for 'Batzer Pinnele' along with Johanes Buntzel, Henery Binzel and Johannes Bindsel. They all signed with an 'X'. Legend has it there was a 4th brother 'Andrew,' but no record of him exists. Ship is the Edinburgh, arrived 9/14/1753. I have some theories on where in the Palatine region they left from but nothing provable.

Baltzer and Philip Bentzel emigrated from Germany to America and arrived at Baltimore in the year 1745. Soon after their arrival, Baltzer came to what is now York County, Penn., and settled near York: he was a shoemaker by trade, reared a family of two sons and four daughters: Henry, David, Catharine Ellman, Anna Maria, Lizzie and Barbara Kump. The father [Baltzer] was a captain in the Revolutionary war: he died when David, who was born in August 1777, was a young man. When David was twenty-four years of age, he married Miss Elizabeth Meisenhelter, and settled upon a farm, on the Little Conewago Creek, near what is now Weigelstown. He was a successful farmer, and in 1811 erected a large distillery, manufacturing whisky which he conveyed by his teams to Baltimore, there being no railroads at the time where it was marketed. He reared a family of five sons and five daughters: Henry, Felix, David, Samuel and Daniel M., Barbara, Mary, Elizabeth, Nancy and Sarah [who died young], all of whom were married except for Felix, who died young.
